Creatine has a useful role alongside resistance training. Start with the evidence for monohydrate, compare equivalent servings, and judge progress through training rather than a quick scale change.

Creatine makes more sense when the question is specific: can it support the lifting routine you are already doing? That is a better starting point than expecting a scoop to reverse aging, replace exercise, or explain every change in energy.
What the older-adult research supports
A 2017 meta-analysis included 22 trials and 721 participants, with study mean ages between 57 and 70. Adding creatine to resistance training produced greater improvements in lean tissue mass and upper- and lower-body strength than training with placebo. Both men and women were included. A 2025 review also reported a strength advantage when creatine accompanied exercise in adults aged 55 and older. It included 20 studies and 1,093 participants, most of whom were women, and found no significant effect on total-body bone mineral density. The studies had limitations, including risk of bias. Why monohydrate is the starting comparison
NIH's exercise-supplement review identifies creatine monohydrate as the most studied form. More expensive forms have not demonstrated consistent superiority. Common research protocols use maintenance amounts around 3–5 grams daily; protocols without a loading phase also exist. Loading is therefore not an unavoidable entry requirement. Compare the ingredient amount in a full serving. If a gummy label lists several pieces per serving, one piece does not provide the declared serving amount. If a blend includes creatine alongside other ingredients, the blend's total weight may not disclose how much creatine is present.
Put the price on an equal basis
Use this calculation for products that disclose the total amount of creatine monohydrate:
Cost per 5 g = container price ÷ total grams of creatine monohydrate × 5.
For a hypothetical $30 container containing 300 g of pure monohydrate, that is $0.50 per 5 g. A $40 package containing thirty 5 g servings costs about $1.33 on the same basis. These are arithmetic examples, not current product prices. Five grams is the comparison unit, not a claim that everyone needs that amount.
Then compare what the extra cost buys: a travel format, flavor, simpler measuring, or independently verifiable product certification. Check the exact product in the certifier's directory instead of assuming that every item from a certified brand has the same status. Certification of contents is a different question from whether a product will help you.
Track the routine, not just body weight
Creatine can increase scale weight through water retention. A quick increase is not proof of new muscle, and a stable scale is not a complete measure of training progress. NIH: exercise supplement evidence
Keep a simple record of attendance, loads, repetitions, and tolerance. For example, note whether you repeated your planned sessions and added a controlled repetition at the same weight. That is an editorial tracking method, not a way to isolate creatine's effect from training, food, sleep, and normal variation.
Change one optional purchase at a time. Starting creatine, a new pre-workout, a new lifting program, and a restrictive diet together makes it harder to interpret either progress or unwanted effects.
Check suitability before building a stack
Tell your clinician about supplements you use, especially if you have kidney disease, abnormal kidney tests, or prescribed dietary restrictions.
