Infrared vs. traditional sauna: heat, evidence, and home setup

Compare infrared and traditional saunas by heat experience, research limits, seating, installation, and the ownership costs that affect everyday use.

THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

Choose the heat experience and installation you will enjoy using. Current research does not establish one sauna format as the universal health winner.

Infrared and traditional saunas can both be appealing ways to spend quiet time in the heat. Buying one involves a more practical question than which technology has the longest list of advertised benefits: which setup fits your home, your preferences, and a routine you will repeat?

The heat experience differs

A traditional sauna warms the room with a heater, often with stones. Infrared systems use radiant heaters and typically operate with cooler room air. The dry-sauna research literature includes both Finnish-style and infrared exposures, with different temperatures and protocols. Neither the thermostat number nor a wavelength label measures the total heat exposure your body receives. Hussain and Cohen, 2018: dry sauna systematic review

Do not transfer benefits between technologies

Research on sauna use is not one interchangeable body of evidence. A 2018 review found substantial variation in studies and many small samples. It did not establish a single ideal format or protocol. That limits attempts to rank an infrared cabin above a traditional sauna on health outcomes alone. Hussain and Cohen, 2018: dry sauna systematic review

A 2025 review of randomized passive-heating trials found no significant pooled benefit for most cardiometabolic and vascular markers, or for systolic blood pressure overall. Some subgroup analyses suggested lower systolic pressure, including whole-body heating and participants with coronary risk or cardiovascular disease. Study limitations and variation make those findings uncertain. They do not establish that a particular cabin prevents disease or replaces exercise. Get the electrical answer before the delivery date

Installation requirements are model-specific. As an example, Almost Heaven lists a 6 kW, 240 V, 30 A hardwired heater for its Salem barrel sauna, plus a separate lighting connection. That is a reason to have the selected specifications reviewed by a qualified electrician before buying; it is not a wiring guide for another model. Request a written installed-cost estimate covering the sauna, delivery, unloading, base preparation, assembly, electrical work, and any accessories you actually need. Ask who handles a damaged delivery, which parts are covered by the warranty, and whether labor or return freight is included. Compare complete quotes using the same assumptions.

Measure the space you will occupy

Put tape on the floor to mark the proposed footprint and door swing. Then check the actual bench length against your preferred posture. “Two person” does not tell you whether two adults will sit comfortably or whether one can recline. Also measure the route from the delivery point to the installation area.

For a hypothetical couple, separate decisions might emerge: one wants a seated shared ritual; the other wants a compact solo heat session. Those preferences can matter more than a small difference between advertised temperature ranges.

Choose a routine you can use comfortably

Follow the exact model's instructions and leave the heat if you feel dizzy or unwell. If a health condition or medication affects heat tolerance or blood pressure, discuss the plan with your clinician; do not change medication on your own to accommodate a sauna. CDC: heat and medications
